Aperitivo, the Italian way

How to build an Italian aperitivo at home with a few well-chosen ingredients.

Aperitivo is not dinner, and it is not just a snack. In Italy, it is the moment before the meal — a drink, a few savory bites, and time to slow down.

You do not need a crowded board or twenty different products. A good aperitivo is built with balance: something salty, something creamy, something savory, something crisp, and something refreshing to drink.

  • Olives & Antipasti

Salty, briny, and full of flavor. This is where aperitivo begins.

  • Cheese

One soft, one aged. That’s enough.

  • Salumi

Thin slices, loosely arranged, easy to pick up.

  • Bread & Crunch

    Taralli, grissini, crostini. Texture matters.

  • Drinks

Light, bitter, sparkling, or citrusy. Always refreshing.

How to Build It

Start with olives and antipasti

Choose one or two types. Add a simple marinated vegetable for contrast.

Add one or two cheeses

Soft + aged is the easiest balance. No need for more.

Include a little salumi

Keep it light. This is not the main event.

Bring the crunch

Without it, everything feels heavy.

Choose the right drink

Refreshing, not filling. Dinner is still coming.

How much is enough

For 4 people: 2 cheeses, 2 salumi, 2–3 antipasti, 1–2 crunchy elements.

  • Olives + Taralli

The easiest start. Salty, crunchy, and ready in seconds.

  • Aged Cheese + Balsamic

Richness balanced with acidity. Small, but complete.

  • Salumi + Grissini

Savory and crisp. Simple, but always works.

  • Making it a full meal

Aperitivo should open the appetite, not replace dinner.

  • Adding too many items

More variety doesn't make it better. It makes it confusing.

  • Too much sweetness

Italian aperitivo leans savory, bitter, and refreshing.

  • Forgetting acidity

Olives, pickled vegetables, and drinks keep everything balanced.

  • One oversized board

Small plates and bowls work better than one crowded platter.
